Yet this doesn’t have to be the case and a subtle hint ofcolour or shine can ensure you add a touch of sparkle.42-43_Layout 1 14/09/2015 11:04 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY43HAIR & BEAUTYany of us don’t have theinclination to undergo aradical makeover, or have the time todevote to head to toe beauty but a subtlechange to your hair, eyes or lips can havea huge impact. Your friends may not workout exactly what’s changed, but they’llnotice that something has. A couple ofsubtle changes over a period of time canhelp you gradually change your lookwhich could certainly prove less scarythan making a big change. The metallic look is big at the momentand that’s a trend which can certainly addshine to your make-up selection thisautumn. Metallic fabrics and finishes havedominated the catwalk at the likes ofChristian Dior, Diane Von Furstenberg,Burberry and Marc Jacobs in a spectrumof shades from palest peach to graphitegrey, and warm metallic colours for eyes, cheeks and lips can prove a distinctiveand eye-catching look. The textures fromspun metallic threads, gentle goldenweaves and hot foil leathers as seen onthe catwalk are being translated into amust have make-up look for eyes, cheeks, lips and nails. For your lips, many women are nowmaking use of a volumiser, which canmake a subtle but notable difference toyour appearance as it adds a boost, firmsyour lips and adds colour no matter howpale you’re feeling during the coolermonths. Many have a highly moisturisingformulation with their plumpingingredients which add warmth and agentle boost of volume to the lips for asmoother, firmer, more youthful result. The super-sleek trend is really big rightnow, and that’s great for those with longand short haircuts alike. Finish yourstyling with a shine spray for a super-glossy style that would certainly ensureyou add a touch of brightness to someotherwise miserable weather. Inevitablyyou need to make sure your hair’s ingood condition, so it’s well worth makingregular appointments with your stylistand making good use of the wide rangeof treatment oils available.Going one step further is the grungywet look, which has dominated thecatwalks in recent months. Again it’s astyle that works well for hair of all lengths, though you may find that it’s not asfeminine as you’d like. Nevertheless theshine and gloss can certainly make sureyou stand out from the crowd.Keeping hair looking bright withoutlosing any shine can sometimes provedifficult. This is especially the case if youhave white or grey hair, which can oftenlook a little dull and lack moisture.Manufacturers such as White Hot aredealing with this, however – their BrilliantShampoo contains extracts of blue lupinwhich helps to neutralise any yellow toneswhich can be caused by UV rays orpollutants in the air, and hence gives abrighter, whiter effect to the hair. So, how can you strike a balance between reachingyour fitness goals and striking the right balance? Our bodies are likea highly tunedengine which needsthe right fuel andnutrients to do itsjob correctlyIt’s Saturday night andyou’ve been to the gym a few timesthis week so feel you deserve thattakeaway that’s been on your mindsince Monday, and maybe a few beerstoo. What harm can it do? You’veworked hard at the gym so it’s a nicereward, not to mention the cake youhad on Friday, the crisps you had onThursday and that pub lunch onWednesday to celebrate a friend’sbirthday.Unfortunately the truth is you can’texercise away a bad diet. In fact theopposite is true; when you exercise yourdiet actually has to be better if youwant to achieve your fitness goals. When thinking about your diet it’simportant to know what you want toachieve with it, especially if these goalsare related to your exercise regime. Our bodies are like a highly tunedengine which needs the right fuel andnutrients to do its job correctly. Howyou feel really does depend on whatyou eat. If you consume high calorie, low nutrient foods, then you’re quitelikely to feel sluggish, have little energyand maybe even feel down in yourself. There are many fitness goals to have, from losing weight and body fat, togaining muscle and improving cardiofitness. For each of these goals the bodyrequires different nutrients, vitamins andminerals. For example, if you want tobuild muscle then your diet will bedifferent to if you were training for amarathon. The main areas to look at are whatwe call Macro Nutrients –carbohydrates, protein and fat. Thepercentage of each of these in a mealwill change depending on your fitnessgoal. So if you are training for amarathon, you are likely to need morecarbohydrates to give you the sustainedenergy you need to run for a longperiod of time. If your goal is to buildmuscle, then you’d be looking toincrease your protein intake which helps44-45_Layout 1 14/09/2015 11:01 Page 1HEALTH & FITNESSthe body to repair and replenishdamaged muscle fibres, thereforemaking them stronger.Fat is also a key nutrient as, like a car,we need to lubricate our bodies toensure our joints work as best as theyare able, as well as being a mechanismto help us absorb the fat solublevitamins from our food. And don’t forget water, the essentialnutrient for life. Being fully hydrated canreally impact on how well you performduring exercise. Just 10 per centdehydration can have a huge impact onyour ability to do exercise. For most people, a diet rich in fruitand vegetables, meat, fish & poultry, beans, pulses, nuts & seeds and plentyof water will serve you well to help youachieve your fitness goals. The question is always asked “should Itake supplements?” The sports nutritionindustry has grown significantly over thelast few years, including the range ofsupplements you can take to enhanceyour sports performance. Again, itcomes back to what do you want toachieve as to whether you need to takeFancy giving CrossFit a go? Supplements mayhelp to give you that extra little bit, butthey shouldn’t replace a good diet aswithout the foundations of goodgeneral health, supplements won’t makemuch difference as your body will usethem just to function rather than toenhance your activity. When you exerciseyour diet actuallyhas to be better ifyou want to achieveyour fitness goals44-45_Layout 1 14/09/2015 11:01 Page 246 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYBREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTHIt’s a sad fact that breast cancer is stillthe most commonly-diagnosed cancer inthe UK, and each year fifty thousandwomen will be diagnosed with thedisease. That’s why the word“awareness” in the name of the event isall-important – the earlier breast cancer isfound the better the chances of beatingit. It’s vital that women make regularchecks, but many women don’t checktheir breasts either because they don’tknow what signs and symptoms they arelooking for, or they simply forget to do it.Hence the first aim of Breast CancerAwareness Month is to remind womenthat knowing their own bodies couldsave their lives. They just need to followTLC – Touch, Look, Check. Touch yourbreasts and ask if you can feel anythingunusual, look for changes in shape ortexture and check anything unusual withyour doctor.Throughout October, Breakthrough isurging women to text SIGNS to 70500 toget their free credit-card sized TLC guide. Not only does the TLC guide detail thekey signs and symptoms of breast cancer,it also includes information about what todo if you notice anything unusual. Itshandy size means women can keep itsomewhere useful, such as in a handbagor on the nightstand, that will act as ahelpful reminder to check their breasts. It’s also important to remember thatbreast cancer isn’t one single disease, asthere are several different types. Not allof them show as a lump, and not allbreast lumps are breast cancer. Thebiggest risk factor is increasing age, with80% of breast cancers occurring inwomen over the age of fifty, but what’sperhaps not so well known is that lessthan 10% of breast cancer runs infamilies – so having someone in yourfamily with breast cancer doesn’tnecessarily mean that you have anincreased risk yourself.Whether you’re going pink this month,or sponsoring someone who is, you canbe sure that the cash raised will go to afabulous cause.A helping handThose who have undergone treatmentfor breast cancer now have a greaterrange of wigs and bras to choose fromthan ever before.
