< Previous20 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYARTISTIC LINCOLNSHIREIt’s testament to Keith’s tremendous creativitythat the Northern Irish artist can’t recall a timewhen he wasn’t making or drawing something, but his introduction into the serious side of theart world came later. The owner of a prestigiousgallery took Keith under his wing, lending himworks of international artists to take home andcopy, with the caveat that the upstart artistdidn’t sell the finished copies. In return, thegallery owner would assess Keith’s style and thentest him with something completely different.Keith’s confidence and skills flourished, responding to the huge array of artists he wasintroduced to and the intricacies of transcribingtheir style in his own hand. After years of tryingnew mediums, he developed a style that iscompletely his own. It was a style that would prove to beimmeasurably popular, with the first in his Bristolseries – ‘Bristol Way’ – selling out within a year ofpublication. While he has been approached by anumber of the UK’s largest art publishers, KeithFrom dreamsto cityscapesKeith Drury is among the UK’s most influential and revered contemporary artists, andnow local art lovers can enjoy his evocative cityscapes at the Little Red Gallery.20-21_Layout 1 19/09/2016 11:04 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY21ARTISTIC LINCOLNSHIRETHE LITTLE REDGALLERYLove art? Using the advanced medium of 3Dmodelling, Keith’s colourful cityscapesadd an air of romance to each location, capturing magical moments, memoriesand dreams. It’s a style that isunquestionably quirky and contemporaryin its interpretation of the urbanlandscape, and yet it refuses to becompromised as every piece is createdwith meticulous attention to detail. Suchis the level of detail that months ofexacting work go into each picture, created, as it is, by a painstaking processof sculpting virtual clay. Landscaping can be carried out all yearround. There may be some planting that youwant to wait until spring to do, but thecreation of hard landscaping, such asdecking, paths, walls or paving, can be doneat any time. There are a few things you doneed to bear in mind, such as the weather.Snow or rain can have an impact on whetherwork can be carried out, but if there is a frost(or threat of one), you can use a frostproofing additive to cement or mortar mixesand cover new work with a plastic sheeting, sacking or old blankets at night. Anotherthing is that daylight hours reduce in thePHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/NICO_LLet there beEd Fuller from Fullers Forestryand Landscaping tells us howlandscaping can be done allyear round, and now’s a gooda time as any.It is usually around this time of year thatthe garden becomes the forgotten part ofthe house. The long summer days havegone for another year, and so the BBQ joinsthe garden furniture in the back of the shed. However, now is the time to be thinking ofany big changes and projects that you wantto do to the garden. It is all too common forpeople to wait until the spring before theystart to think about the garden again, butyou are likely to find that any goodEd Fuller22-23_Layout 1 19/09/2016 11:05 Page 1winter and so if you have contractors carrying out workthen don’t expect them to be working until late. Due tohealth and safety they will not be able to work muchbeyond 4pm due to lack of light. We have, however, usedfloodlighting in the past to meet deadlines. Another thingto consider is that hard landscaping can cause disruptionto existing plants. While most contractors will doeverything they can do minimise damage during thewinter, most plants are dormant and so the risk of anylong-term damaged is greatly reduced. I have a fabulous team that will work come rain or shineand they are highly skilled landscapers who can createanything from low maintenance gardens with artificialgrass to romantic cottage gardens and state-of-the-artultra-contemporary gardens. Over the last seventeen yearsI have built up a family run business that prides itself ondesigning and creating gardens that suit each individualclient’s budget, regardless of their garden’s size and shape. If you want to make some changes no matter how big orsmall, I would advise you to consider doing them soonerrather than later so you have the perfect outdoor space fornext summer. Also remember that this is the time of year to bepruning deciduous trees (ones that lose their leaves inwinter). This is because it is best to prune them when theyare dormant in autumn and winter and due to the lack ofleaves you are able to see the natural shape of the tree. The well stocked borders boast a variety of shrubs, fuchsias, fragrant herbs ands alpines. The myriad of horticulturalspecimens provide a spectacular view wherever you happen toglance. It is impossible to take in everything in just one visit. At the rear of the lawn is a further garden which has astriking border of giant marigolds. A winding path leads pastthe imposing white dovecote, a new addition for this year, pastan old five bar gate – the original gate on the property – to thesmall but secluded arbour. Especially noteworthy is a feature that allows water tocascade through a series of jugs and bowls, each lit with asmall, atmospheric light. This led to his young granddaughterbecoming mesmerised and asking Grandad if he believed infairies. Like any good Grandad, he duly replied that he did andon one Spring evening as the sun set, the pair, armed withblankets and hot chocolate, sat in the arbour waiting to see ifthey could catch a glimpse. Pure magic for both, as readerscan well imagine. This garden has clearly created special memories for thefamily and whilst it does require considerable dedication aplaque in the garden affirms: “a garden is a thing of beautyand a job for life”, and looking at the results, it’s hard todisagree.24-26_Layout 1 19/09/2016 11:06 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRETODAY27BURTON WATERSA stroll around some highly desirablehomes, a walk along the quaysidepromenade of small shops, a break for aglass of wine or a bite to eat at thepopular eating places and somepampering at the David Lloyd Leisureclub is guaranteed to give you a taste forlife at this special place.Set in the midst of the LincolnshireCountryside, Burton Waters is a marinadevelopment that aims to have the bestof both countryside living and theamenities of Lincoln city, which thedevelopment straddles.
