Openedin 1770, the canal took over seven yearsto build at a staggering cost of £28,000 –which was naturally much moreexpensive in 1770. The Louth Navigationwas profitable for a number of decades, but struggled to match the savings of therail industry that started to appear in the1840’s. Ultimately it was the great floodin 1920 that doomed the NavigationCompany, who could not afford to repairthe damage that had been done. Tetney itself is a much more humblevillage, with its biggest claim in historybeing the Marconi Beam Station, whichhelped to establish the first radio linkbetween the UK and Australia. That isdefunct now, with only the bases for themasts remaining. To the east of thevillage lays the Tetney Marshes, over1,500 hectares of coastal mudflats, saltmarsh, saline lagoons and dunes. Theentire area has been marked as a Site ofSpecial Scientific Interest and also aSpecial Protection Area, by the RSPB. Thisforms the Tetney Marshes NatureReserve. To the south is another nature reserveknown as the Tetney Blow Wells, whichour route will also visit. The Blow Wellsare artesian springs flowing fromunderlying chalk aquifers throughboulder clay to form a series of poolswhich were used to supply water tofarms. The RouteOur journey begins in Tetney onChurch Lane, which can be found nearthe Plough Inn. Continuing down thislane as the path bears to left takes us toHoop End, but we will instead walk onunto the uneven lane of Mill Race.A stile on the left grants access to theedge of a garden, leading on to a doublestile and a footbridge. From there wehead diagonally through the meadow, keeping a conifer hedge on the right-hand side and taking an enclosedfootpath beside it.We will continue in this path until awide bridge on the left can be seen, which we cross onto another track. Thiscontinues for a mile or so unto anotherbridge, which will allow us to avoidTetney Lock itself (If you wish to visit theLock you can bear left and follow thecanal instead, crossing at that point andthen going right to get back to thispoint). A signed canal-side footpath appears onthe right soon after crossing the bridgeand a brisk two mile walk will bring us toThoresby Bridge. The path continuesbetween some buildings, one of whichwas once a canal building itself. We crossExploringLincolnshireon footTetney VillageWalking is good for not only the body but also the soul. This month we visit a little village nearGrimsby named Tetney and the Louth Navigation.34-35_Layout 1 19/09/2016 10:46 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY35Thoresby Bridge to begin the returnalong the far bank of the canal. Thepath soon veers to the left along a grassbank. Taking the next two right turnsbefore travelling left down a field path,we come to the corner of the woodlandwhich encloses the Tetney Blow Wells. As a Nature Reserve there are manyfootpaths and routes that can be visitedin the Blow Wells, especially if you wishto see the Artesian springs or view thewildlife on offer. But for now we pass bythem, travelling towards the corner ofthe woods and turning left over a smallfootbridge. Another stile by a gate onour left, we keep ahead and crossanother footbridge and veer right to athird bridge at the Tetney Drain.Crossing this and walking along theleft-hand path takes us to a beautifulmeadow that joins onto an enclosedpath which takes us all the way back toChurch Lane, our very starting point.FACTFILESTART:Tetney VillageDISTANCE6.5 Miles or 11 KilometresMAPSOS Landranger 113 (Grimsby) orExplorers 283 and 284 34-35_Layout 1 19/09/2016 10:46 Page 2GLCommercialscommercial trailer hireGLCommercialscommercial trailer hireHUMBERSTON ROAD, CLEETHORPES.TEL: 01472 313600ALSO AT: NEWARK ROAD, SOUTH HYKEHAM,LINCOLN. That’s why the word “awareness”in the name of the event is all-important– the earlier breast cancer is found thebetter the chances of beating it. It’s vitalthat women make regular checks, butmany women don’t check their breastseither because they don’t know whatsigns and symptoms they are looking for,or they simply forget to do it.Hence the first aim of Breast CancerAwareness Month is to remind womenthat knowing their own bodies could savetheir lives. They just need to follow TLC –Touch, Look, Check. Touch your breastsand ask if you can feel anything unusual, look for changes in shape or texture andcheck anything unusual with your doctor.Throughout October, Breakthrough isurging women to text SIGNS to 70500 toget their free credit-card sized TLC guide. Not only does the TLC guide detail thekey signs and symptoms of breast cancer,it also includes information about what todo if you notice anything unusual. Itshandy size means women can keep itsomewhere useful, such as in a handbagor on the nightstand, that will act as ahelpful reminder to check their breasts. It’s also important to remember that38 ÁTaking the fight tocancerOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month andthere are loads of ways in which you can join in andraise money and attention.PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/WAVEBREAKMEDIA36-39_Layout 1 19/09/2016 11:33 Page 238 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYBREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTHbreast cancer isn’t one single disease, asthere are several different types. Not allof them show as a lump, and not allbreast lumps are breast cancer. Thebiggest risk factor is increasing age, with80% of breast cancers occurring inwomen over the age of fifty, but what’sperhaps not so well known is that lessthan 10% of breast cancer runs infamilies – so having someone in yourfamily with breast cancer doesn’tnecessarily mean that you have anincreased risk yourself.Whether you’re going pink this month,or sponsoring someone who is, you canbe sure that the cash raised will go to afabulous cause.A helping handThose who have undergone treatmentfor breast cancer now have a greaterrange of wigs and bras to choose fromthan ever before. Certainly many lingeriecollections now offer a varied selection ofpost-mastectomy bras – produced to thesame high standards as the rest of theircollection and just as attractive to look atand wear, but made to fit. Many of Lincolnshire’s lingerie retailershave undergone specialist training infitting mastectomy bras, and like allwomen there’s an obvious benefit in self-esteem that comes from wearing aproperly fitted bra. They can arrangespecial fitting sessions to measure you upand make a host of valuable suggestionsover what’s best for you. There are also alarge number of hair and beautyspecialists in Lincolnshire that can helpyou find the right kind of wig that’ll suityou and boost your confidence.Being diagnosed with breast cancercan certainly be a scary experience butit’s comforting to know that so manypeople are working hard to raiseawareness of the causes and try andprevent the spread of the disease.
