What we want is something to keep us out of troublein the first place so here’s a selection of cars we’ve tested oflate that should fare better under more challenging climaticconditions.First up is the Subaru Levorg - Subaru has a strongreputation for rugged, well built cars with excellent four-wheel-drive systems and this lesser known model with anadmittedly strange sounding name, is just the job. The nameis a portmanteau, if you will, of the words: LEgacy, reVOlution,SafetyfirstAs winter looms on the horizon our minds turn to which are the safestcars to drive and this month we look across some of the cars we’verecently tested to see which models offer the best protection. and touRinG. If you’ve read our road tests in previous issues you’ll knowit’s very capable in slippery conditions and although Subaru ismore focused on roadholding than performance its 168bhp1.6 litre boxer engine certainly does the business. It’s arefined unit that doesn’t get too vocal when revved. Itsresistance to roll is very impressive and, in our book, ithandles impeccably so should keep readers safe throughoutthe darker nights when you’re caught unawares. It alsoscored highly in EuroNCAPS performance tests in the event ofcollisions. So if you are unlucky enough to be broadsided bysomeone, or hit head on, you should be well protected. 74-77_Layout 1 19/09/2016 11:10 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY75COUNTY MOTORING whatever you throw at it. It’s an upmarket SUV that competeswell on price with most SUV’s in its class and we certainlyweren’t disappointed with the levels of refinement in the cabin. In fact, we were taken aback by how light and relaxing it feelsto drive. It’s perfect for taller drivers or those who need extraleg room in the back plus it comes with the option of five orseven seats which is another great advantage – we also likedthe powered tailgate, which is standard on all but base SE trimmodels.Last but by no means least are BMW’s xDrive models – asyou’ll see we’ve just tested the 3 series X drive but the systemis available as an optional extra on practically all modelsnowadays and, for our money, is well worth the investment. Unlike traditional all wheel drive vehicles, the XDrive is anintelligent system that under normal conditions splits thepower between the rear wheels and front wheels on a 60:40basis. Should the weather turn though or you hit a wet or icybit of road, any grip lost is detected by the onboard computerand, in milliseconds, it transfers more power to the wheelsthat DO have grip through a clever mutiplate clutch that sitsbetween the front and rear axles.76 ÁLand RoverDiscovery SportIf the Levorg doesn’t quite float your boat, then cast youreyes over our test this month on the Subaru Forester, the carthat virtually pioneered crossovers. Jaguar’s XE is worthy of mention too - scoring 92% onadult occupant safety the range received a part time fourwheel drive diesel version earlier this year making it aformidable choice. Jaguars system works by sending powerto only the rear wheels in normal driving conditions, toconserve fuel, but when the Intelligent Driveline Dynamicsdetects a loss in traction, torque transfers to the frontwheels. It’s certainly a driver’s car - it handles superbly, grips welland has sharp handling to boot and as the body is madefrom lightweight aluminium it’s a great car to drive with allthe hallmarks of a ‘proper’ Jaguar, although betterenvironmental credentials than the Jags of old. Next up is the Land Rover Discovery Sport – a great car todrive, based on the Range Rover Evoque and withpermanent 4 wheel drive. Its 2.0-litre diesel engine and four-wheel drive provide the driver with the ability to handle74-77_Layout 1 19/09/2016 11:11 Page 2None of this is discernible to the driver of course exceptwhen you get around a bend you didn’t know was there, ona dark wet night, and you wonder how the heck you cameout of that in one piece. It’s a great bit of kit – perhaps oneof BMW’s best kept secrets - and well worth looking into, now you know it exists.Of course, no car is going to make you invulnerable anddriving in the dark calls for a proactive approach. Lights, heaters and wipers all put high demands on our car battery. So, where you’re driving is mainly on an evening or earlymorning and you find yourself stuck in traffic, remember thebattery is taking a lot of punishment. Replacing one as itapproaches the end of its lifespan, rather than waiting for itnot to start one cold dark morning, will save you lots offrustration .Likewise, turning the heater fan down and rememberingto switch off the heated rear window once windows areclear will help prolong battery life, as will trickle chargingyour battery on a weekend if it’s just moored up in thegarage.Regular checks on lights, bulbs and wipers can save youfrom an accident too, as can making sure your tyres haveplenty of tread. In fact if you live or travel in remote areaswinter tyres are a good investment as they have a highersilica content preventing them from hardening when frostsoccur, and affording far better grip in the cold and wet.Subaru LevorgJaguar XEBMW xDrive74-77_Layout 1 19/09/2016 11:11 Page 3DISCOVERY LANDMARK UPGRADE YOUR ADVENTURES TO FIRST CLASSNew for 2016, Discovery Landmark is the most luxurious model yet, with superb levels of finish, both inside and out. That’s where Subaru’s legendary 4x4 engineering comesto the fore and, in particular, the Forester. A traditionallooking, high-riding SUV with a go anywhere do anythingattitude that introduced the world to crossovers beforethey were even heard of. Forester drivers get to choose from three different trimlevels and of course, petrol or diesel so there’s somethingto suit all tastes. Whichever model you choose though youcan be assured there’s no compromise on the four wheeldrive option, ensuring ultimate grip. Our test car was the XC premium diesel and what a car. It’s an accomplished and enjoyable ride with plenty of legand headroom both front and back. The rear seats evenrecline and there’s a decent boot that’s easy to expandsimply by dropping the rear backrests to a fully flatposition making it into an estate. We found the 2.0 litre turbo diesel boxer enginesurprisingly refined and gutsy. And, as anyone who’sdriven one will testify, Subaru’s boxer engine is supersmooth with a distinctive sound that really appeals. Asyou’d expect, all models come with stop start technologyto conserve fuel. Our test car for instance averaged around50+mpg and opting for the CVT transmission cutsemissions, saving you money on road tax, or yourcompany car bills.Creature comforts are high too, so whichever versionyou choose, you get keyless entry/stop start, climatecontrol, CD/DAB radio system, cruise control and heatersfor the front seats plus self-levelling rear suspension.
