Even more so when theweather man forecasts the white stuff as Iknow my choice of rear wheel drive andthe big fat tyres are going to send meeverywhere except the direction I want tobe travelling in. I was delighted therefore to pick up ourtest car this month – a BMW 320d xDrive. This is BMW’s answer to this very problem- a multi plate clutch fitted between thefront and rear axles, which acts like adifferential. In normal driving conditions itputs down 60% of the power to the rearaxle and 40% to the front. However, should you lose any grip at the front orback and the computer will transfer morepower to the wheels with the besttraction. All this happens in millisecondsbut you’d be hard pressed to notice it.Propelled by a silky smooth 2.0 litre 4cylinder diesel engine, our test car cutthrough the traffic in no time. Loadedwith creature comforts such as dual-zoneclimate control, Bluetooth, iPod/USBconnectivity and the infotainment systemwith its 6.5-in screen, you’d think there’dbe little else to want for. You’d be wrongthough - our test model came with theopulent M Sport plus package, 19-inch mStar Spoke alloys, sill panels, privacy glassfor the rear passenger windows and thosesubtle M badges on the front wings, aswell as a Harmon and Kardon stereo. I must also mention the sports autotransmission which allows the driver fourdifferent driving styles: EcoPro, Comfort,Sport and Sport+. As its name suggests,EcoPro is for economy, Comfort and Sporteach adjust the engine and gearboxsettings to give you a little more ‘verve’and Sport+ takes this a step further andreally offers the wow factor. All in all, an amazing ride made all thebetter by xDrive technology which willundoubtedly keep readers safe this winter, and in style of course.Test car courtesy of Soper of Lincoln,Tel: 01522 690000Get a grip80-81_Layout 1 19/09/2016 10:57 Page 2Range fuel consumption (excluding Outlander PHEV) in mpg (ltrs/100km): Urban 26.9 - 57.6 (10.5 - 4.9), Extra Urban 32.8 - 72.4 (8.6 - 3.9), Combined 30.4 - 65.7 (9.3 - 4.3).
