< Previous70 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY BURGHLEY HORSE TRIALS O ver 165,000 spectators and 80 world class event riders congregated to be part of this prestigious 5 star event this year in early September over the four days with the competition hotter than ever with a prize fund of over £300,000 shared between the winners. This is a far cry from the inaugural event which took place more than 50 years ago with only 19 competitors competing infront of about 12,000 spectators! The horse trials are now recognised as one of the top three events in the world forming part of the top ranking world ‘grand slam’ which also includes the Badminton and Kentucky Horse Trials. The testing cross country course rode well for the competitors and, as usual, was designed by Captain Mark Phillips, father to Zara Tindall who competed this year. Unfortunately Zara was disqualified in the cross country on Saturday after falling at an early fence. But she said, “Burghley holds a very special place in my heart forming a big part of my initiation into three day eventing when I started out and was riding Toy Town nearly 20 years ago, this year my young horse did it’s best and we will be back next year all being well at Burghley, one of my all time favourite venues”. It was impressive that Great Britain took all of the top three winning places with Pippa Funnell on MGH Grafton Street beating her good friend Piggy French on Vanir Karmira by only 0.1 fault and the determined Oliver Townend coming in third on 2017’s winner Ballaghmor Class after knocking a fence down in the final section of the showjumping on the Sunday. BURGHLEY HORSE TRIALS 2019 The beautiful parkland and amazing historic sixteenth century Burghley House, set near the delightful town of Stamford, is still owned by the original builders and lived in by the Cecil family and provides a breath-taking backdrop for the famous horse trials in the parkland and gardens of approximately 10,000 acres - being partly developed by the famous Capability Brown - and all added up to create the usual magic found at Burghley Horse Trials. 70-71.qxp_Layout 1 13/09/2019 14:26 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 71 Pippa was thrilled and couldn’t hide her delight winning the event again after 16 years and to receive two uniquely baked cakes by a local Stamford chef, one for herself and one for her horse with carrots and sugar lumps! A large trophy and of course the impressive prize of £95,000 - sponsored by Land Rover. Pippa told me about her horse, “He’s not the best show jumper but I’ve always been convinced he had a big win in him – and I am especially delighted it was here at Burghley!” Preparations are already underway for 2020’s event as looking after proceedings is a year round project with the annual cost of helping to create the challenging cross country course and it’s 32 fences, preparing the top quality dressage and showjumping arenas and not forgetting other surrounding events for ponies and novice classes, all comes in at over £2 million pounds. This major logistical operation also includes building the many marquees and facilities to serve the thousands of spectators, sponsors and press, including bringing in electric and water supplies to all parts of the parkland for food and drink vendors, toilets, and of course the planning and erection of over 600 popular hand picked trade stands where you could buy anything from a new car to a garden sculpture and designer clothing both for yourself, dog and horse - there clearly was something for everyone. The sight of the magnificent house, horses galloping across the park and delicious smelling gourmet food being cooked in the food forums leaves an indelible and incredible lasting impression. It all adds up to make Burghley Horse Trials something that Lincolnshire can be proud of not just throughout the UK and Europe but now throughout the world. by Jilly Day 70-71.qxp_Layout 1 13/09/2019 14:26 Page 272 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY COUNTY MOTORING BMW Concept 4 The BMW Concept 4 hovers close to the road. The distinctive kidney grille, remarkable air intakes and prominently sculpted surfaces provide an immediate advert for the car’s performance and its engaging character as a driver’s car. The BMW Concept 4 displays BMW’s signature proportions at their most modern form yet. The stretched bonnet, long wheelbase, flowing roofline and short overhangs create a modern, elegant and dynamic coupe outline and send energy coursing through the low-slung body even while it’s standing still. The slim and focused twin headlights are slightly angled and team up with the kidney grille to lend the front end a modern look with a strong identity. The BMW Concept 4 offers a look ahead to the expressive face of the 4 Series range. The IAA 2019 International Motor Show Germany took place in Frankfurt last month, at which all the big brands were showcasing their latest offerings that we might see on our roads in 2020. Here are some of the cars we may see gracing Lincolnshire’s scenic roads. Future proof BMW Concept 4 72-73.qxp_Layout 1 13/09/2019 14:27 Page 1Land Rover Defender The new Land Rover Defender was revealed at the Frankfurt IAA on 10th September. An icon reimagined for the 21st century; it has been cleverly engineered with capability and safety for all the family at its heart. New Defender is built for the adventurous and curious, for those who know the value of community and strive to make a difference. A distinctive silhouette makes the new Defender instantly recognisable, with minimal front and rear overhangs providing excellent approach and departure angles. Land Rover’s designers re- envisioned familiar Defender trademarks for the 21st century, giving the new 4x4 a purposeful upright stance and Alpine light windows in the roof, while retaining the side-hinged rear tailgate and externally mounted spare wheel that make the original so identifiable. New Defender is as technologically advanced as it is durable and introduces Jaguar Land Rover’s new Pivi Pro infotainment system. The next generation touchscreen is more intuitive and user-friendly, requiring fewer inputs to perform frequently used tasks, while its always-on design guarantees almost instant responses. The Defender will join the line-up in 2020. Audi RS 7 Sportback Although unmistakably descended from the A7 Sportback, with which it in fact shares only its bonnet, roof, front doors and tailgate, the new RS 7 Sportback looks perpetually ready to wield its sledgehammer performance – its sinewy body virtually hugs the road surface, and its sizeable wheels are shrouded by boldly flared arches that leave no margin for doubt about the mettle of this latest Audi Sport offering, which for the first time houses five seats and a mild hybrid drivetrain within its significantly broadened body. Much like the exterior design, the architecture inside the new RS 7 Sportback combines taut surfacing with clearly defined contours, and seamlessly integrates the futuristic user interface. Special RS displays use the Audi virtual cockpit to provide details of tyre pressure, torque, performance, oil temperature, boost pressure, lap times, acceleration, and g- forces. This Sportback is going to be available in the UK from November, with deliveries beginning in January 2020.
