Finding a safe, reputable practitioner is quite like a lottery. Legally, non-surgical cosmetic procedures like Botox® and dermal fillers can be injected by ANYONE regardless of their training or experience. The lack of regulation has resulted in a mass of unscrupulous people masquerading as trained professionals from a variety of premises who entice you through their doors promising to deliver great results at incredibly low prices. The truth is, without proper training, the results of any non- surgical cosmetic intervention can be disastrous. In my 13 years of cosmetic nursing experience I have had to do many ‘corrections’ that have been problems caused by cheap, non medically qualified beauticians, hairdressers and even other doctors and nurses. These include occlusions caused by dermal filler blocking blood vessels which can lead to skin death! Loss of feeling in the lower face due to nerves being blocked by filler by dissolving the filler with prescribed medication. Counselling patients who have had toxin injected in the wrong muscles or wrong dose on how to reduce the effect while waiting for it to wear off and then retreating correctly. Medical advice and referral for PDO threads which were placed too superficially (close to the surface) in the skin. It’s important to consider safety before having any type of injections especially in the face. Recommended checks are: Is the practitioner Medically Qualified eg Nurse or Doctor or dentist? During years of medical training we do lots of anatomy training and gain experience doing different types of injections. Is that nurse or doctor trained in Aesthetics and how much experience in aesthetics or cosmetic work do they have? Just because they are medical doesn’t How safe is your face? Sarah Barker from Flawless Aesthetic Clinic in Long Bennington explores every you need to know about non-surgical cosmetic treatments. 44-45.qxp_Layout 1 20/09/2021 07:47 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 45 HAIR & BEAUTY automatically qualify them to inject the face and orthopaedic surgeon who fixes bones isn’t necessarily used to injecting the delicate muscles and tissue in the face! Nor does a dentist know about the fat in your cheeks. Are the premises their own, clean and sterile? For one ‘mobile’ practitioners may be there on the day of your treatment, but what if you need advice 2 days later and they don’t have another clinic for a month? Bacteria can easily get into injection sites, are they wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) sterile gloves and following correct procedures to keep both of you safe and clean. Do they ask about your medical history and wellness before treatment? A good assessment leads to a good treatment outcome. It’s important to check suitability and expected results before treating a patient with facial injections. Are their treatments priced appropriately? For a decent QUALITY CE MHRA approved filler it costs at least £130 to buy from a reputable supplier. It’s not just the drug add rent, appropriate time to do the treatment effectively, gloves, numbing cream, needles, cannula, assessment paperwork or software, aftercare leaflets, registrations and medical and public indemnity insurance it should be no less than £200 if they are a genuine company. For anti wrinkle injections eg Botox, Azzalure, Bocoture a PRESCRIPTION is required by law and that prescription should be used for the patient it is prescribed for. Costing around £100 again it should ring bells if people are offering it cheaper than this it is either shared with others or over diluted if they can do that. It is of paramount importance that clinics practice patient safety right from the first contact. At Flawless Aesthetic Clinic as a Registered Nurse, I make sure that any risks or side effects associated with treatments are made explicitly clear; I ensure that the patient is clear on all treatment options available to them; and most importantly, carry out a thorough assessment during the initial consultation process to determine which treatments are suitable for the patient, and which are not! Should I feel that a patient is seeking a certain treatment that I do not think is appropriate post-assessment, as a medical professional, I regularly refuse to perform certain requested procedures (not just for safety purposes, but also because I practice integrity and some people are not ready for treatment. Flawless Aesthetic Clinic is registered with The Care Quality Commission, (CQC) who regulate health and social care services provide people with safe, effective, compassionate, high-quality care. This has seen them established as a permanent staple in the nation’s exercise routines while other fitness fads come and go. Now even more popular in the wake of the pandemic, regular jogging and running comes with major health benefits, including cutting risk of heart disease by improving blood pressure, good cholesterol, and blood sugar sensitivity, as well as bolstering lung capacity and efficiency. Running is associated with lowering risk of certain cancers and diabetes and strengthening joints, muscles, and bones, and if running outside it provides an opportunity for a vitamin D boost. Further, by getting you to move your entire body weight continuously, it burns more calories than most other forms of fitness, supporting weight loss and control. On top of the physical benefits, though, running and jogging help improve mental health and cognitive function. Keeping you focused and present with what you are doing, running is a significant stress reliever and effective in helping treat depression. In addition it has been connected to better sleep, and falling asleep faster, while of course we can’t forget the euphoric ‘runner’s high’ that results from the release of endorphins and other hormones and brain chemicals during running that ease anxiety, stress, and depression. All in all the aerobic exercise can extend your lifespan! If looking to embark on your jogging and running journey, consider your goals. Are you aiming to get fit, maximise your fitness, lose weight, take part in a competition or event? These can all be great motivators. For beginners, the thought of running can be daunting, so for those new to the activity, ease yourself into it. Start with a brisk walk, for 30-minute sessions, then move to a couple minutes of jogging or running at a time at an easy pace with a minute of walking in between. Gradually increase your running time as your body becomes accustomed, and you will be feeling that runner’s high! This process will also help prevent injuries. Just ensure to warm up and stretch properly before you put your feet to the pavement, perhaps with some quick walking, marching, side steps, and cool down with some light stretches when the workout is complete. Remember to consume plenty of fluids before, during, and after, and scheduling in two rest days a week is also advised to avoid overtraining and resulting injuries. New joggers and runners will want to plan a route before stepping out the door, choosing flat, grassy, well-lit areas if possible, and mixing up your route each session to keep running interesting, prevent boredom and subsequent lack of desire to run. To really enhance the Run like the wind There’s nothing quite as exhilarating as a good run or jog, especially at this time of year when cutting through the crisp, cool autumn air. 46-48.qxp_Layout 1 17/09/2021 08:46 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 47 HEALTH & FITNESS running experience, though, one should make sure to wear the correct shoes and that these suit your foot type. For instance do you have low, high, or neutral arches? A poorly fitted, old pair of trainers is a common source of injuries, but with shelves upon shelves of different sneakers out there, what should you be looking for? Seek out running shoes that bend easily, feel comfortable, and offer a wedge of shock- absorbing material at the heel. Furthermore, ensure the fit is not too tight. It is wise to get advice from specialist stores, have your feet assessed, and shoes professionally fitted to achieve ultimate comfort as each runner is unique in how often they train and their running style. Another tip is to wear the socks you plan on running in when trying new trainers on. As the shoe’s structure weakens over time with regular use, experts recommend to replace running shoes every 300-400 miles. Running shoes are an essential, designed to protect feet from the road, provide traction on different surfaces, and support your feet while cushioning landing shock. They also aid in preventing injury and boost performance. The flexible, breathable footwear protects your feet, legs, and body from the repeated stress placed 48 Á © Shutterstock /Panomphon Damri 46-48.qxp_Layout 1 17/09/2021 08:46 Page 248 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HEALTH & FITNESS upon it while running, and with appropriate cushioning, helps alleviate knee, hip, and back pain by improving body mechanics. Extra stability is provided and overpronation (where the foot rolls inward when running, misaligning the knee from the lower leg tilting inward) and supination (where the foot rolls outward when running) fixed. The former can lead to shin splints amongst other issues, while the latter is associated with ankle injuries, plantar fasciitis, and further injuries. Diet also plays a key role in improving running and jogging sessions, allowing one to run further, faster, and recover rapidly. Being advised to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet (with fresh and natural foods centred on vegetables, lean meats, fish, seeds, and whole grains), is all well and good, but there are some specific foods that are noted as the best for runners. In the few hours before a run for example turn to carbohydrates for fuel, foods with a high glycaemic index during or after running for quick energy replenishment, and carbohydrates and protein post-workout for recovery, as well as brightly coloured fruit and veg containing antioxidants to combat inflammation and stress on the body from training. Including protein and some healthy fat in meals and snacks prior to running is also important. When it comes to eating and running, try not to eat meals straight before, instead leave a couple of hours between them - eating too close to a run can lead to cramps and side stitches. Generally you should neither feel starved or overly full. You only really need to eat ahead of running if travelling a long distance. However if you will be eating near to a run, look for a high-carb energy booster like a banana. With a healthy dose of potassium, this is great for long distance runs and hotter temperatures when sweating more and losing minerals, and bananas are known to help prevent cramping. Other good carbs include oats, which are also high in fibre, full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and provide energy over a longer period of time. Meanwhile broccoli, full of vitamin C, can help minimise risk of sore muscles post-workout. It is additionally an ideal source of calcium, folic acid, and vitamin K. After a run, plain yoghurt holds key benefits, such as speeding up recovery, and strengthening bones through its calcium contents.
