If you find yourself at a looseend, there’s always something to do. With a strong tradition forlive music, theatre and an ever-improving arts programme, culture is very much alive. That’s not to mention the massiveincrease in great bars, restaurants and night clubs that haveopened too.Lincoln’s relatively recent growth thanks to both BishopGrosseteste University and the University of Lincoln expandinghas meant the nightlife has taken a more youthful directiontoo. During term time, you’ll no doubt see a regularprogramme of DJs, live bands and comedy around the Brayfordcampus and nearby, as well as clubs upping their game. However if shooters, student nights and loud music aren’t yourthing, there’s a whole host of more austere nights out alongthe uphill area as well as dotted around the high street and intown too. You really can’t beat the atmosphere of a meal out atthe weekend on Bailgate, followed by a few cocktails in thevarious bars that line Steep Hill and The Strait.Elsewhere, our market towns are offering more and morevenues that, with a little detective work, are hosting night afternight of fantastic entertainment. Comedy nights have seen areal boost lately, with regular nights taking place in pubs, townhalls and the various independent theatres our countyharbours. Theatres in our region have also seen more competition overthe last few years, meaning each venue is striving to bring thebest acts to the county. Recent big names to hit the regioninclude the likes of Bill Bailey, The Moscow City Ballet, SarahMillican, Kaiser Chiefs, Stereophonics, Hawkwind and manymore, proving that there’s variety as well as quantity. The region’s food has always been one of its highlights andthe standard we see on a regular basis means you should neverbe short of a place to eat, drink and be merry. A visit to theLincoln Performing Arts Centre on Lincoln’s Brayfordcampus meant that one of alternative comedy’s firstoriginators is on fire. Famous for his BBC series’,appearances on The Young Ones and much morebesides, Sayle’s style remains frank, angry and fiercelyleft-leaning reflecting his somewhat unconventionalupbringing in an atheist, communist household inLiverpool. Mainly anecdote-fueled, the show takes twists andturns through his dealings with the cult of celebrity, how age has affected his outlook and some whistfuland often expletive-ridden portions of his childhood.Age hasn’t dampened Sayle’s style, he’s still dancing onthe spot, goofing for the audience throughout and his constant stream of consciousness is both hilarious and insightful. The packed-outtheatre greets every gag with laughter and even applause for the more political material. If seventeen years seems too long, let’s hope he’s back in the county again soon. Writing the book means I really got the sense of the history of theplace and I felt a bit guilty pre-judging it. I always thought Cleethorpes was a bit crapbut when you get to know the history of the place, it’s really special.I think one of the nicest things is that you really see the care that has gone intoCleethorpes. In a lot of the towns I went to, you felt like it had been abandoned, GreatYarmouth is a great example. But in Cleethorpes there are lots of new developments, and there’s clearly been lots of love and affection been put into it.What would you say sums up Lincolnshire people?Well, in every seaside town there are people trying to preserve the past – peopletrying to conserve lidos and theatres, and in Cleethorpes’ case the Winter Gardens.Sometimes they’re successful and sometimes they’re not but they fight for it. Even if ittoo late to save it, like the Winter Gardens, there’s still campaigns to recognise them andjust have a blue plaque there.LincolnshireToday @lincstoday lincolnshiretoday.netStay in touch withLincolnshire TodayWe love to know what you think of Lincolnshire Today – so get in touch with us viaTwitter at @lincstoday or search for us on Facebook.
