Add to that the list of awards for theXF generally, from Best Brand in the JDPower/What Car ownership satisfactionsurvey to the Best Executive Car accolade, and this one’s a true winner. BMW 3 series touring estateBMW weren’t about to compromise theirstandards with the latest 3 series and theirestate version is no exception. It’s a great drive, and combines performance with economy. WeSpace, comfortand refinementA huge number of drivers are emphasising practicality above all else when it comes to choosing vehicles.4x4s are hugely popular and there are some fantastic vehicles out there, while the executive estatemarket is also brightening up with some innovative and highly attractive new cars, as we illustrate.082-084:Layout 1 11/10/13 12:57 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY83COUNTY MOTORINGAudi A6 Avant EstateMercedes E Class EstateMazda 6 Tourerjust love the way the tailgate glass can be opened separatelyto the rear door, making for easier loading if you findyourself shorthanded. The 3 series Touring estate has alsowon plaudits from most of the motoring press and isdefinitely a contender for our top three. Audi A6 Avant EstateAudi’s impressive build quality has kept this Germanmanufacturer at the top of its game for many years. TheA6 Avant might look a little less muscular than most of ourselection but this is the attraction of driving an Audi – noone pigeonholes an Audi driver, there is no stereotype. Asfar as practicality is concerned the A6 Avant is faultless –match this to its range of fast yet efficient engines and youhave a highly capable load lugger that’s as comfortable asany executive saloon.Mercedes E Class EstateOf course no line up of estates would be completewithout a mention of the E class Estate from Mercedes. It’sa little pricey if you allow yourself to get carried away withthe options list but oodles of load space make this modelworthy of inclusion in our list and they’re about asdependable a work horse as they come.Mazda 6 Tourer OK, you may be surprised to see the Mazda6 Tourerestate along some of the other vehicles – but its low fuelconsumption and Co2 emissions make this a crediblealternative. The interior spec might not quite be up to theGerman marque level but we love the 2.2-litre diesel andthe generous kit levels make this a worthy contender.082-084:Layout 1 11/10/13 12:57 Page 284 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYCOUNTY MOTORINGLots of Lincolnshiremotorists cherish cars frombygone motoring eras, whenthe roads were less crowded, and cars had more character. We pay Simon and AlisonHolloway a visit near Spilsbyto see their rare near-concours Jensen Interceptorconvertible. How old is it?It’s almost forty years old now, it wasbuilt in 1975.Has it always looked this good?Certainly not! It was bought it as abare and rusty shell in 2004. We had five-month-old twins at the time, so it was noopen funded restoration; more a labourof love! The paintwork and re-trim weredone professionally in Lincolnshire, butwe did the rebuild, mechanics, interiorand electrics. The electrics werecomplicated, there are three sheets ofwiring diagrams and thirteen relays in thehood alone! How rare it is?Extremely. It’s a walnut dash model.Only thirteen were produced.Does it travel far? We use it in the summer. It’s hard togo anywhere in it. As soon as you getout, people want to talk to you about it.It sounds nice too - it has a V8 engine of7.2 litres. That’s one reason for not goingtoo far. Having two sets of twins isanother! Is this original colour?Yes. And it’s the original registrationnumber too. For a company that didn’tmake many cars, Jensen offered lots ofcolours. Getting one of these was likebeing fitted for a suit. They even paintedone to match a lady’s purple handbag.Haven’t I seen it somewhere before?Yes, if you watched the Red RidingTrilogy on Channel 4, when it was used inthe story by actor Sean Bean. The car wasinvolved with that for three weeks.Have you contacted any previousowners? All of them! We’re convinced one is ahousehold name rock star, though hewon’t confirm it.Is this your only classic? No, we’re Jensen nuts. We have aJensen GT – only about 200 right-hand-drive ones were made – two Mk1Interceptors, and the rarest of the lot, aJensen Coupe, one of about 50 or somade. That will be on the road next year,we hope. All the cars were ‘poor’ or‘really poor’ when we bought them. What would it cost me to get one?The first production Interceptor has beenadvertised for £75,000. A ‘ready to go’convertible could be upwards of £45,000. Few othermanufacturers could provide you withthe same degree of fun and style for sucha great price. No surprise then that, following the international buyout of thisgreat institution, dealers have beeneagerly awaiting the new supermini, theMG3 to put the marque firmly back onthe map. The good news, for those who fondlyremember the British marque, is that ithas been styled and assembled here inthe UK – the company’s Longbridgeoperation still retains three hundredengineers and sixty designers and this iswelcome news indeed. As we discover during our road test, ride and handling are absolutely great –in fact the steering is so positive we’resoon nipping down A and B roads with agrin from ear to ear. The 105bhp powerengine comes into its own above 2,500revs and the designers have somehowmanaged to pull off more headroom andlegroom than almost any of its rivals. This car is almost ‘TARDIS like’ – fromthe outside it’s very definitely asupermini, inside though there is plentyof room, even in the rear for passengerslegs to extend which is so unlike asupermini. You’d also be forgiven forwondering what MG have sacrificed toget the car under the £10,000 budgetprice, but we were astonished with thespec on our test car - stylish fabric seats,a dab radio, air con, Bluetooth phoneand audio streaming, six airbags and antiskid control, to name but a few. Exterior styling hasn’t been overlookedeither – colour coded wing mirrors andbumpers, funky decals, LED runninglights, alloy wheels and sporty bodystyling like side sill extensions and rearspoiler really help make a statement.Admittedly, we were driving theupgraded 3form sport trim but even thatdoesn’t push the car through that magic£10k barrier. In fact, if you spec this car up to thehilt and buy the 3 Style you’ll still getchange from £10,000, and that’s on theroad prices! Interestingly enough, thiscomes with the Sport trim’s styling kitplus 16 inch “Diamond cut” alloy wheels, cruise control, parking sensors and autolights and wipers. Now that’s got to haveFord Fiesta and VW Polo owners beatingthemselves up for having spent an extra£3000-£5000 and ending up with far lessspec in the process. Crucially, MG has somehow managedto bag a Group 4E insurance rating, andthis makes it as attractive a propositionon paper as it does aesthetically. Boundto put as big a smile on the faces ofthose insuring the car as those driving it– not always one and the same person if Irecall from my son’s first car, and mywife’s cars over the last twenty years! The MG3 is most definitely a fun car todrive, but one that also ticks all the boxesstyle wise and practicality wise. It’ll beinteresting to see how its rivals manageto argue their case for charging up tohalf as much again.
