< Previous60 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYCOUNTY MOTORINGSHOWTIME!Okay, so it only happens once every two years, but the Frankfurt Motor Show is asignificant date for us motoring journalists. It’s one of the biggest of its kind andreveals what we can expect to see in the county’s showrooms in coming months. It’s certainly a day when journalists and our photographers earn theirmoney as touring the entire show, just once, clocked up around nine milesin shoe leather, but here’s our low down on some of the latest models andconcept cars.Audi’s e-tron Quattro Fiats newimprovedFiat 50060-62_Layout 1 12/10/2015 16:24 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY61COUNTY MOTORINGReceiving a lot of attention, of course, was Ferrari’shigh performance 488 Spider. Powered by the 488coupé’s 3902cc turbo-charged V8, this car offersblistering acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in just 3seconds and 0 to 200 km/h in just 8.7 seconds. What a car - the light,,high performance spaceframe chassis is made of 11 different aluminiumalloys containing varying percentages of magnesiumand with specific characteristics to meet thedemands of the different areas of application -Extraordinarily, this yields the same torsional rigidityand beam stiffness figures as the coupé, improvingthe chassis’ performance by 23 per cent over that ofthe 458 Spider. The 488 uses the RHT (Retractable Hard Top)which debuted on the 458 Spider as world-first forsuch a solution on a mid-rear engined car which ofcourse is lighter than a soft top and provides betterprotection from noise. It can also be raised orlowered in 14 seconds, even when the car is moving. The car’s mechanical set-up and dynamic vehiclecontrols make a pivotal contribution to its powerfullysporty behaviour on the road with ‘Manettino’settings chosen for its mission. Specifically, thetechnicians worked on the ‘magnetorheologicaldampers’ to guarantee maximum sportiness withoutcompromising on comfort. The new SSC2 Side SlipAngle Control system also makes it easier for non-professional drivers to drive on the limit. Additionally,to ensure superb fun behind the wheel on morechallenging routes, the 488 Spider responds virtuallyinstantaneously to steering wheel inputs (0.06seconds – 9 per cent faster than the previous Spider).Meanwhile, Mercedes exhibited their car of thefuture the IAA (Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile).Dubbed the ‘digital transformer’ this Mercedesallows, at the touch of a button, or automatically onreaching a speed of 80 km/h, for the car to physicallychange its dimensions. It performs a fascinatingtransformation in which it increasing in length frontand rear, and improves the air flow around the frontend and the front wheel arches; the Active Rims altertheir cupping; and the louvre in the front bumpermoves the rear, improving underbody air flow. This futuristic car is also packed with technologythat enables it to communicate with other vehiclesor other sources of information. This represents amajor advance in helping to avoid accidents, asobstacles or events which are not visible to thevehicle itself can be detected – almost being able tosee around corners as it were.As one might expect, all the German marqueswere well represented on their home turf includingPorsche with their Mission e and new Carerra 911 S. Audi too, revealed their all-electric, luxury-classsport SUV, the Audi e-tron Quattro. And, althoughonly classed as a concept it appeared to us to be alittle further on than that.Harnessing the power of three electric motors -one for the front axle, and two for the rearperformance is sports car like with 0-60mph sprintsin less than 4.6 seconds and top speeds of 130mph. An intelligent drive management system controlsthe interplay between them as appropriate for thesituation. The focus here is on the greatest possibleefficiency. The driver decides on the degree ofrecuperation, the driving program S or D and themode of Audi drive select. The battery’s capacity of 95 kWh enables a rangeof more than 310 miles and the Combined ChargingSystem enables charging with DC or AC electricalcurrent and taking just 50 minutes to charge from a150 w Dc charging station. Additionally, a large solarroof charges the battery on sunny days. This light airy four seater is equipped with all thetechnologies that Audi has developed for piloteddriving: radar sensors, a video camera, ultrasonicsensors and a laser scanner. The data these supplycome together in the central driver assistancecontroller in the luggage compartment. It computesa complete model of the car’s surroundings in realtime and makes this information available to all62 ÁPorsche 911 Carerra S The all new VW Tiguan60-62_Layout 1 12/10/2015 16:24 Page 2assistance systems and the systems forpiloted driving. On the subject of concept cars, Nissanexhibited their newGripz. Designed as acar with a dual personality, the Gripz is avehicle that can handle the day-to-daycommute and deliver a genuineadventure at the weekend. It blends theability and practicality of a compactcrossover with the excitement andperformance of a sports car. It’s easy to dismiss this as mere rhetoricbut let’s not forget Nissan’s pedigree in thisarea. The iconic Safari Rally-winning Nissan240Z was a sports car re-engineered usingexpertise gathered from Nissan’s 4x4 rangeto cope with the demanding conditions ofthe Baja Peninsula, the open plains ofKenya, Uganda and present day Tanzania. These rally racers featured a raised rideheight, toughened suspension and sporteda matt-black finish for the bonnet andtrunk set against a deep red-orange bodycolour – hence the chosen colour schemefor the Gripz. It comprises four doors – with deepdihedral front doors that swing out andup when opened, and a pair of rear-hinged half-doors behind. There’s no B-pillar, allowing easy access to the 2+2interior. Another savvy touch in this dayand age is the forward-facing camerasembedded in the front lights, which willno doubt prove handy in the event of acollision but as they record every journey, and use a live feed, it also meansadventures in the Gripz can be beamedaround the world, allowing friends tofollow your exploits on their computer, tablet or smart phone. Then there’s the all-new Alfa RomeoGiulia Quadrifoglio – a high-performancesaloon with an emphasis on light weightand agility boasting a top speed of191mph. Under the bonnet lies an all-aluminium, 2.9-litre turbo petrol V6engine, inspired by Ferrari technology, which produces 510hp and 600Nm oftorque, cutting a dash of 0–60mph in lessthan 3.9 seconds. As can be seen for the images, thissleek Italian model has a long bonnet, short overhangs, muscular haunches anda long wheelbase giving it a purposefulstance. And, underneath lies some verysophisticated suspension and steeringinnovations to ensure it delivers a nearperfect ride, There’s also a newIntegrated Brake System (IBS) – aninnovative electromechanical systemwhich combines stability control and atraditional servo brake for instantaneousbrake response and consequent record-breaking stopping distances, a newActive Aero Splitter - a front aerodynamicaid which actively manages downforcefor higher performance and better grip athigher cornering speeds. All of the Alfa Romeo Giulia’s state-of-the-art systems are governed by theChassis Domain Control (CDC), atechnology developed jointly withMagneti Marelli which acts like the car’s‘brains’ and coordinates all the on-boardelectronics. The system manages theaction of the various features such asTorque Vectoring, Active Aero Splitter, active suspension, brakes, steering andESC system – according to the modeselected by the driver using the new AlfaDNA Pro, which enables you to choose62 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYCOUNTY MOTORINGfrom four driving configurations:Dynamic, Natural, Advanced Efficiency (anew energy efficiency mode) and on highperformance versions, a Race setting. Meanwhile, Mini had plenty of interestaround their stand with the latestClubman. Effectively the estate version ofthe car, its larger overall size and newfour-door layout rather than a single rear-hinged second door on one side appearto be winning hearts and minds and isalready available in our showrooms. The same goes for BMW’s new X1which features new styling and a newrange of powertrains. The latest model istaller than its predecessor and the engineis now mounted transversely creatingbetter interior space and improving safety. Also making its debut as it arrives inshowrooms is the latest Fiat 500 . Hard tosee where the 1,800 changes have takenplace though even though we like thestyling and engine changes. This iconicbrand has certainly proved a wow withbuyers though, so I guess designers werea little flummoxed on what they could dodifferently.Volkswagen seemed to be putting abrave face on things given their adversepublicity and the Tiguan helped takevisitor’s minds off the controversy. Thenew Tiguan is longer, wider and lowerthan its forerunner, has improved interiorspace and luggage space increases quitesignificantly. VW adds that the car is up to25% more efficient (although we all gaveeach other a sideways glance as theyquoted figures!) It will however beavailable in front wheel drive or four-wheel-drive options and a plug-in hybridversion is on the cards too apparently.Mercedes IAA Alfa Romeo Giulia QuadrifoglioNissan GripzBMWX1xDrive25iBugatti VisionGran Turismo60-62_Layout 1 12/10/2015 16:24 Page 3Established in 1980, Duckworth Land Rover remains an independent family business looking after the needs of their customers across Lincolnshire. Most journalists have positioned the F-type asbeing somewhere between the Porsche Boxster andthe 911, but we feel that’s doing Jaguar a disservice. It’s fast but composed and feels more grown up andless girly than a Boxster ever could. It also handlesfar better.Admittedly, it is strictly a two seater and the drivercan feel a little cramped in the cockpit –but as wesaid it’s seriously old school and we like that cossetedfeeling you get from the Jag. The F-type comes witha choice of three supercharged petrol engines:335bhp and 375bhp V6s and a 488bhp V8.
