It’s quite short and worthdoing after the walk to see the brightlycoloured panels illustrating village life, localindustry and wildlife. Also, on a green nearthe church, is the massive Bassingham Bullwoodcarving, a tribute to a local “celebrity”tethered just where his namesake once“worked” on the village green.St Michael’s church tower was rebuilt in1782 and the remainder heavily restored in1860 though some Norman work remainsinside. Until 1926 the church had five bellsbut when a sixth was installed no-onewanted to change the name of the villageinn; so the “Five Bells” it remains to this day.At Thurlby the tiny St German’s church, much of it 12th century, is tucked away bythe hall and dwarfed by an immense cedartree. The hall has its own tale to tell though.Since the 17th century it was the seat of theBromhead family one of whose memberswas Gonville, an army lieutenant at Rorke’sDrift in South Africa in January 1879following the British defeat at Isandlwana. He survived, won a VC and was portrayedby Michael Caine in the film Zulu.At Haddington we cross the ancientearthworks of Hall Close with open accessand information boards. Although it is nowmostly grassy mounds the area contains thesites of two manors (one possibly Saxon), amediaeval hall and moats.Close by is St Peter’s church that seems tobelong to Haddington but was actually builtin 1863 as a new church for Aubournthough inexplicably isolated from thevillage. Only the chancel nowremains of the 12th century church but itretains an original priest’s door. Concretemarkers in the grass however trace thefloorplan of the full-size church.NOTES.Park considerately nearBassingham church.
