It’s great to gettogether with friends but often it can feel as if you haveto find a different outfit and a different look for eachgathering. You shouldn’t have to feel this way – Christmasparties are supposed to be fun, not a competition. Yet ifyou want to make a splash the good news is that one ofthe key trends for this winter is undone glamour. SteveHogan, Creative Director for Schwarzkopf ProfessionalEssential Looks, says, “Undone glamour is the distinctglamour of today – it’s a free-spirited, Bardot-inspired,just got out of bed look, that’s all about acontemporary, undone feel, texture and movement.”The overall idea is that you don’t need to try hard tolook good – a laidback approach, with a sprinkle ofconfidence, can work wonders. The undone looks arenaturally styled, with tousled waves, casual buns andmessy braids. The key phrase is glamorous, yeteffortless. Many hairdressers are taking their inspiration from theseventies. It’s often a much maligned decade but thebohemian, hippy vibe, with the soft curls and volume, isbrilliantly appealing and looks fantastically sexy withoutStay chic thisChristmasThe trend this Christmas is for natural, effortless beautyStay chic thisChristmas044-045_Layout 1 17/11/2014 09:28 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY45HAIR & BEAUTYyou having to worry about keeping yourstyle in place throughout. Volume, smoothness and shine is where it’s at.The other benefit is that it’s somethingthat’s easy to do when you go fromdaytime to evening, and there arelimitless styling possibilities. The whole approach has an addedbonus as messy, tousled hair will make itmuch easier to withstand the differenttemperatures and environment you’llencounter as you go from the coldoutdoors to warm and toasty venues – aswell as the various hats and hoods you’lldoubtless don to combat the cold! This understated approach means youdon’t need to pile on the product. Manyproducts, such as the new OSiS+Glamination range from Schwarzkopf, offer a feather-light formula infused withliquid, light-reflecting minerals, whichadd a touch of lustrous shine to the hairwhile also giving it grip and flexible hold– without weighing it down. One problem with hair and skinaround this time of year is that it can getdull and fragile. The effects are usuallyobvious with your skin but not alwayswith your hair and you may not evennotice the lack of moisture until it startsto break. Across Lincolnshire, stylists canoffer a course of bespoke organic hairtreatments containing wheat, soyproteins and plant extracts to increasethe moisture and lipid levels of your hair. They also protect from dryness andstrengthen the hair fibre making it lesslikely to split. If you’re wondering about keeping yourhair looking shiny and glossy over thewinter, too, you could invest in a haircolour treatment that contains ingredientsto enhance the colour as well as protectand moisturise. It’ll also add a bit of colourand interest that’ll help you stand out at aparty and add a bit of colour to anotherwise gloomy part of the year. Lookfor permanent hair colours that containnatural and certified organic ingredientssuch as aloe vera, comfrey and grapefruitso that the elements and the environmentwon’t damage your hair long-term.Like your hair, dull and lacklustre skincan prove a real problem in the winter –and can make you look older than youreally are. Dullness is usually a result of abuild-up of dead skin cells on your faceand regular exfoliation lifts the dullingfilm of dead skin from your skin to giveyou a fresh and more youthful lookingcomplexion.Despite the cold temperatures, the sunis still shining and UV rays can stilldamage your skin as they can during thesummer. UVA rays are the rays that ageyou and they are the same strength allyear round. During the day, you shoulduse a moisturiser rich in antioxidants toprotect skin from free-radical damageand repair skin which has previously beendamaged during the warmer weather. The trend for undone glamour andeffortless beauty this Christmas meansyou can relax and enjoy your festivesoirees.IMAGES BY SCHWARZKOPF PROFESSIONAL044-045_Layout 1 17/11/2014 09:28 Page 2HEALTH & WELLBEINGOne of the main challenges we have as a gym is gettingpeople to take the plunge and come and try CrossFit for the firsttime. Once we get them through the door and they’ve had ataster session very few ever look back. Our favourite excuse is when people say that they aren’t fitenough yet and would like to get in shape first. Quite simply the best way to get in shape is by taking theplunge and getting started. When we opened as a gym thisJanuary we didn’t have a single girl who could do a single pull upfor two whole months. You look around the gym these days andthey are banging them out left, right and centre. These thingstake time, so rest assured, very few people walk in and hit theground running from day one. The movements we do can alsoscare people off, but only by seeing first-hand how these can bebroken down, scaled and simplified do people begin tounderstand that you don’t need to be superhuman. We have a quote in big letters on the wall, which reads “Itnever gets any easier, youjust get better”. It doesn’tmatter what level of fitnessyou have when you first walk through the door, the workout isgoing to be just as hard. Yes, if you keep coming to CrossFityou will get fitter, stronger and faster but this will also mean thatyou’ll be able to make your workout that much harder throughheavier weights, more complex movements and additional skills. In the same class, someone might be lifting a PVC pipe whilesomeone else might be lifting 200 kilos, because the workoutsare so scalable but they’ll be suffering just the same.- Crossfit is for every fitness level out there. Coaches help youto scale exercises so you will feel challenged, but not out of yourdepth or at risk of injury.- You find your strengths and weaknesses. There will be thingsyou really struggle with and things you excel at.- You start for the workout and stay for the friends. You willmeet so many inspirational and fun people that sometimes you’lljust come to the gym for a catch-up.Everyone started with different backgrounds, fitness levels andgoals. The one thing we all have in common is we took that firststep inside the gym to see what CrossFit business was all aboutand haven’t looked back since. CrossFit… but am I fit enough?LEAVE YOUR EGO AT THE DOORCrossFit is humbling to everyone, aim forprogressionnot perfection. Knee braces are also popular among walkersand climbers, who all put a tremendous strain upon the knee.As we approach the winter, it’s more important than ever tomake sure you have the correct protection against potential injury– or if you already suffer, to be certain you have an appropriatebrace to prevent the worsening of an existing condition. There are many different knee braces to perform different jobs –some assist the knee in doing its job, others prevent the kneefrom performing certain functions and others off-load some of theforces to different parts of the knee. It’s vital you ensure you havethe correct brace for whatever it is you plan to do – enjoying longwinter walks through snow, ice or mud or venturing off piste!A consultation with a qualified and experienced orthotist willmake sure you’re all set for a winter of fun and activity, whateveryour favourite sport or pastime. If you currently own a brace, bring this along to check its suitability and condition.Fancy giving CrossFit a go? I maintaina busy life with afull time job, ayoung child, ahouse and ahusband, so myexcuses not to gowere oftenrelated to anyone of those. I ate badly and was in denial about thefact that even three years after the birth of my son I wasstill a stone off my pre pregnancy weight and was acomfortable size 12/14 – being quite small this wasn’tvery flattering! So I started CrossFit with a friend and it was ok, but Istill couldn’t see how I would achieve what I wanted. But results come quickly. The gym work tirelessly tointegrate members and encourage people, so cleaneating challenges, pairs work outs, in-house and externalcompetitions all help you to make friends and getinvolved and I was soon there 4-5 times a week, theatmosphere is addictive. I realised very quickly I had acompetitive streak which motivated me. When youachieve a lift or skill and then better it, you just can’twait to get back in and try it again. A few tweaks with my diet (by no means as good as itcould be) and being consistent with training, meansthat eleven months on, I am a size 10 and below mypre-pregnancy weight. Weight was always my mainmotivation, but now that’s secondary to how much Ijust enjoy the whole experience. It’s social, supportiveand competitive, but without being bitchy or cut-throatand the guys running it work tirelessly to help, they areinvested in you, which is something you don’t getanywhere else.BURTON WATERS CLINICDo you suffer from...Foot Pain?Knee Pain?Back Pain?Orthotic intervention helps to reduce pain, slow the progression of a deformity or prevent injury.Orthotic treatment is not just for professional athletes or people with complex medical conditionsBook your assessment with a qualified and experienced Orthotist.6 & 7 The Landings | Burton Waters | Lincoln | LN1 2TUCALL 01522 520 362 /07946 598 133info@quaysorthotics.co.uk | www.quaysorthotics.co.ukAs weapproach thewinter, it’s moreimportant than everto make sure youhave the correctprotection againstpotential injury046-047_Layout 1 17/11/2014 09:33 Page 248 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYCARVERSRESTAURANT & TAKEAWAYDeliciously Deliciously LincolnshireGoldAwarded for outstanding quality and service byLincolnshireTodayawardWWW.LINCOLNSHIRETODAY.NETExperience the best Fish and Chip Restaurant the areahas to offer, in stylish comfortable surroundings.Bookings now being taken for Authentic Greek nightsCome along and enjoy traditional Greek cuisine & an experiencethat will acquaint you to the Mediterranean way of dining.Spaces subject to availability, bookings strongly advised. Now taking Christmas party bookings, book now to avoid disappointment266-268 Ashby High Street, Scunthorpe DN16 2RXTel: 01724 277831Christmas FestivitiesFor bookings and more information: Stallingborough Grange Hotel, Riby Road, Stallingborough DN41 8BUTel: 01469 561302Email: reception@stallingboroughgrange.co.ukwww.stallingboroughgrange.co.ukFri 5th Dec Michael Bublé Tribute Night£36.00 Includes Christmas Fayre MenuFri 12th Dec Ultimate Christmas 70’s Night£32.00 Includes Christmas Fayre MenuFri 19th Dec Rock & Pop Around the Christmas Tree £32.00Includes Christmas Fayre MenuSun 14th Dec & Sun 21st Dec Lunch with Santa£19.50 Adult. Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, jack frostnipping at your nose… but what other fantasticfestive treats can you enjoy this December?Well, if you’re out and about a lot in the county, you’ll havealready enjoyed the autumnal specialities that come withHalloween and Bonfire Night, who could resist the hot dogs andtoffee apples? As our thoughts turn to Christmas, most of us will beconcerned with where to source the turkey and where to grab thefestive vegetables from. Well, fear not! We’d suggest that for such aspecial meal, some adequate preparation is needed to make it thatbit much more memorable.Instead of relying on the supermarket, we suggest you look intotwo different options - the first is to head out to your local eateries, with mouth-watering gastronomy on offer and with the tinsel andturkey experience dispensed with at most restaurants and pubs inour area. The second is to make that meal the best you’ve ever cooked. With such amazing ingredients at your disposal in Lincolnshire, why would you look anywhere else? For meat in particular, thelocal butchers are second to none, able to take advance andbespoke orders, you’ll not end up with a drab piece of factory-farmed rubbish, but a healthy, tasty haunch that will tasteincredible on the plate. The same goes for vegetables. With Lincolnshire sometimes beingreferred to as the country’s larder, the incredible amount of choiceand the sheer quality of produce is astounding. Making the effort istotally worth it, for both how the food looks and ultimately, how ittastes. Pushing the boat out just once a year is worth it!As far as drink is concerned, those lucky enough not to bedriving should take up what the pubs are offering in terms offestive real ale, wintry wines full of seasonal berries and of coursethe essential festive drink, mulled wine. The rise of mulled ciderover the years as a bona fide Christmas drink is also something wewelcome, a warming, indulgent treat. We’ll be attempting to gethold of some over the Lincoln Christmas market - who can beatsomething that warms your hands so readily and tastes so good?PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/JOE GOUGHPHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COMKONSTANTIN CHAGIN048-050_Layout 1 17/11/2014 09:24 Page 2Next >
